How to Unclog Plumbing Vents
If your sink is not draining well, but your waistline is not clogged, then the source of your problem could lie in the vent system, on the rooftop. These pipes that just up from your roof are called plumbing vents, and they can become clogged with leaves, trash, and other debris. A baseball might stopper a vent, or you might even find birds or rodents in there. When a plumbing vent is clogged, this keeps air out, and the water flow can create a vacuum that can reduce the speed of the water supply or stops it entirely. And unfortunately, addressing this problem can be difficult, so prevention would be ideal. Sometimes a special-made screen can reduce the risk of this problem.
But if you are already looking at clogged plumbing vents, you will have to proceed very carefully. Ideally, you would want someone to go up to the roof who has worked from such heights before. If you feel up to the task, then you need rubber-soled shoes, a safety harness to protect from falls, and a dry roof. Then armed with a flashlight, plumber’s snake, and garden hose, you can examine the suspect vent pipe. You can start clearing out any nest materials, leaves, etc. that you can get to. For out-of-reach debris, you can use the plumber’s snake. Then you can send the hose down the pipe and ask someone to turn the hose on. If you pay attention, you can hear the water build-up, and then you would hear the rushing sound of debris being swept down the drain.
Is the clog due to a frozen plumbing vent? Then the solution is hot water. You do not exactly want to take a bucket of water up a ladder with you, however. Instead, you can take a rubber hose that is made to handle hot water, and attach this to the hot water line by your washing machine. Once you can run the hose up to the roof, your problem should be solved.
