Plumbing Tips Every Homeowner Should Know
If you don’t know much about your plumbing system, now is a great time to start. If you learn some basics about plumbing, you can minimize the occurrence of costly plumbing repairs, and avoid the mess of a plumbing disaster. Here are some tips that every homeowner or renter for that matter can use!
Orange & Pink Discoloration Around Bathroom Fixtures
If you see orange or pink discoloration around your bathroom fixtures, this means that there’s probably too much iron in your water. By installing a water softener, this issue will be resolved.
What to do With a Leaky Dishwasher
Leaky dishwashers are a pain, and they can damage your flooring. The good news is that if the water is leaking from the drain line, it should be an easy fix.
It’s possible that the drain hose that connects to the main sink drain was not installed correctly. To install it correctly, the dishwasher drain hose needs to be hung upwards, and then back down into the sink drain. This way the water will drain properly and won’t stand in the drain line.
Damaged Toilet Flapper
If excess mineral deposits accumulate on a toilet flapper, the damaged flapper can allow water to run nonstop in the toilet, thereby leading to a waste of water and a higher water bill. To resolve the issue, merely clean the mineral deposits off of the toilet flapper, or replace the flapper itself.
Toss the Cheap Shower Heads
On the outside, a cheap shower head may appear just as good as a quality one, but it’s not. If you’re using an inexpensive shower head, you should replace it with a high-quality model that isn’t as prone to failure.
Don’t Use the Blue Stuff to Clean Your Drains
It may be tempting to run to the store for some over-the-counter drain cleaner at the first sign of a clog, but this is not recommended.
Instead, attack the job manually with a plunger or a handshake. If liquid drain cleaner is used at the first sign of a clog, if it doesn’t do the job, most plumbers won’t go near the drain for up to 48 hours so the acid in the drain cleaner can dissipate.
Don’t Put Chlorine Tablets into the Toilet Tank
Chlorine tablets are bad for the toilet tank because they eat away at the rubber parts inside the toilet tank, leading to unwanted leaks.
Get Rid of Rubber Washer Machine Hoses
If you have rubber washer machine hoses, it’s better to replace them with stainless steel braided hoses. If a rubber washing machine hose bursts, it can dump as much as 500 gallons per hour into a home if it’s left unchecked.
