Should I Clean Out My Sewer Drain?

Should you get your sewer drains cleaned, also known as a sewer cleanout? Should this be a part of your regular main sewer line maintenance, or should a sewer cleanout be done on an as-needed basis? If you’ve never thought about a sewer drain cleanout in your years as a homeowner, you may want to consider this drain cleaning/plumbing service.

Usually, sewer drain cleaning is done on an “as-needed” basis when there is a small clog or blockage that needs to be removed with an auger or hydro jetting, and after the clog is cleared everything can resume as normal. However, if the drain cleaning wasn’t done before the drain line gets a clog so bad, it causes a main sewer line backup, leading to the sewer system spewing raw sewage into the home, which costs much more to get cleaned out/repair the water damage.

Fortunately, clogged sewer lines usually give some clues before a complete clog occurs. The most common signs to look out for a blockage or build-up in the drain pipe include:

  • Gurgling sounds that come from drains or toilets.
  • Water that backs up or pools around drains or toilets.
  • The smell of raw sewage coming from the drains.

While some homeowners use DIY drain cleaners and other chemical-based drain cleaners, there are times when the plumbing issues they face are too much. A-1 Sewer & Septic are experts at sewer backups/sewer cleanouts and can fulfill nearly any homeowner’s or business owner’s plumbing needs. Main drains and septic systems are our long-time specialty. Our professional plumbers and the experience they provide our customers have given our plumbing company the good name we have in the Kansas City metro and surrounding areas.

Most of the time, we can auger out the sewer line clog and clean the drain line rather quickly before it becomes a major plumbing system problem. There are times, however, when the problem may not be with the main line but with a backed-up septic tank or a septic tank that is in need of repair (seeing sewage in your yard/landscaping is a sign that you have an issue). If you are on municipal sewer service, then the city may need to be involved if your camera inspections show that your city sewer feed lines are clear.

However, if there is a history of slow-draining plumbing lines or tree roots that penetrate the wastewater main lines, or if you happen to live in an older home, then you may need to have the mainline cleaned out by our professional plumbers using high-pressure water techniques, also known as hydro jetting.

With high-pressure water jetters, we can remove gunk and residue that has built up in your lines, including food, grease, hair, mineral deposits, soap scum, and other debris.

In more serious backup cases, a drain auger (also known as a cable or snake) just won’t cut it, but a high-pressure cleaning will get the job done. Unlike a cable or snake that clears an obstruction, high-pressure drain cleaning actually cleans out the lines.

We can perform sewer cleanouts via an access point somewhere on the cast iron pipe (or other pipe material), and from there are able to use the auger or hydro jetter to get the job done right.
